About Steffen
A steady, relational presence, with the courage to awaken and challenge you when needed
I have spent more than 30 years walking alongside people as they navigate life’s challenges, relationship tensions, emotional overwhelm, and the quiet longing for change. My work is grounded in deep listening, gentle curiosity, and a calm therapeutic presence that helps you feel safe enough to explore what truly matters.
Originally trained in Germany as a Diplom‑Pädagoge (Psychology, Education, Sociology, NZQA Level 8), my clinical foundations began early in Germany, including formative work in the Department of Oncology at the University Clinic Düsseldorf, where sitting with patients and families taught me that grief begins long before death. Over 25 years ago, I also trained deeply in the traditional German systemic approach to Family Constellation work, completing a yearlong learning group and assisting a seasoned constellation therapist.
I immigrated to New Zealand in 2009 with my wife and our two children. Since then, I have supported individuals, couples, families, and men’s groups across the Coromandel, Thames, and Waikato regions, including clinical roles in Family Safety Thames, community agencies, and private practice.
I am a NZAC Provisional Member and NZAPP practitioner, offering a trauma‑informed, non‑judgemental approach to emotional and relational wellbeing.

Professional Strength & Clinical Expertise
Over more than three decades, I have developed a steady, reliable, and deeply human way of working with people. Clients often tell me they feel safe, understood, and able to open up in a way that surprises them. I don’t claim to understand people instantly; instead, I offer a presence that allows trust to grow naturally and at the right pace.
Awakening Courage & Momentum
My therapeutic style is warm and calm, yet also clear, activating, and challenging when needed. I help people see themselves honestly, interrupt old patterns, and awaken parts of themselves that have been quiet for years.
"I am able to lighten the fire in your belly, so you begin to empower yourself to change, to grow, and to step into a stronger, more grounded version of yourself."
Many clients experience meaningful shifts early in the process, and for others, our work naturally deepens into long‑term healing and personal transformation.
A Natural, Paced Process
Trust is never forced. We move at the pace your nervous system can integrate, cultivating steady roots before reaching for expansive growth.
Working NZ‑Wide and Internationally
Alongside my Whitianga practice, I also offer online sessions for people living overseas. Over the years, I have supported clients in Canada, the United Kingdom, the USA, Germany, and France.
It is not my main focus, but it is absolutely possible, and often meaningful for people who feel drawn to my way of working.
My background in intercultural studies at university, combined with my own experience of immigrating to New Zealand 17 years ago, gives me a deep understanding of cultural transitions, identity shifts, belonging, and the emotional challenges of living between cultures.
I enjoy working with people from all cultural backgrounds, and I bring sensitivity, curiosity, and respect to every session.
Therapy in English or German
I speak two languages fluently: English and German.
As a native German speaker, I offer counselling and psychotherapy in either language, depending on what helps you express yourself most naturally and comfortably.
For many clients, being able to switch languages brings clarity, emotional depth, and a stronger sense of connection.
How I Work
My style is warm, steady, and deeply human; when needed, I bring clarity, challenge, and directness to help you grow.
Whether you are facing anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, trauma, anger, or simply a sense of being stuck, I offer a calm sanctuary where you can breathe, reflect, and rediscover your inner strength.
"Therapy with me is not about “fixing” you: it’s about helping you understand yourself more clearly, soften what hurts, and move forward with more confidence and direction."

Why People Choose to Work With Me
"Many clients tell me they feel “met” for the first time: seen without judgement, supported without pressure, and invited into a deeper understanding of themselves."
